Islington Maisonette – A Light and Airy, Fun & Technology Filled Home

How did the project come together?

Uncover the story behind this open plan project

Stage 1:

Preparing the concept design

This maisonette was on the market for some time with no takers, we were keen to see the transformation we could make to this property and it was a project close to our hearts, as this was to be our new family home. We wanted to create a light and airy space that was also fun, colourful and with the children and technology in mind.

The property was devoid of any natural light and was dark and almost eery in its feel. The property required a complete overhaul to  transform it from dark and dingy to light and fantastic! The open plan kitchen and lounge is a favourite with the family aspect of being able to monitor the childrens activities whilst cooking or entertaining in the kitchen leading onto the garden.

We implemented a whole host of design tricks to achieve stunning results on this property, it includes hidden technology, including skirting board heating to save on space as well as a vertical Lego play wall, keeping the floor space clear and tidy. The sense of space was easily creating without extending an inch on the property, it was the design that was behind creating more space.

We used our knowledge of cutting-edge and vintage products to create a highly functional family living space, bursting with colour, fun and texture whilst being practical at the same time.

Always looking to innovate, we ditched the traditional tile for a varnished wallpaper by contemporary American designer, Aimeé Wilder to make a fun family bathroom.

Stage 2:

Defining the layout

We needed to meet the fire safety requirements due to the decision to change the enclosed staircase to an open staircase design. This meant removing a protected means of escape, we installed a domestic misting system, which is approved by the relevant authorities and allowed for our open staircase without any breach of any regulations.
